Seasonal tradition in early summer, “Chagu Chagu Umakko”
Chagu Chagu Umakko is a festival of over 200 years of history to appreciate plow horses in Iwate Prefecture which has been long known as a production area of horses. The festival participants walk with the horses in colorful fittings for approximately 15 km between Onikoshi Sozen Shrine enshrining the god of horse which was born from the affection for horses in Takizawa City and Morioka Hachimangu Shrine. “Chagu Chagu” is derived from the sound of numerous bells worn by the horses and this festival was selected as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property and as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan” by the Ministry of the Environment.
