Thank you for visiting Kyukamura Urabandai's blog today.
“Akabeko” is a craft that represents Fukushima Prefecture.
Even if you've seen it, you probably don't know why it's red or where it originated.
This time, I will introduce Akabeko!
What is Akabeko?
Akabeko is a papier-mâché doll made from a red undercoated cow with black spots and a white border.
In the olden days, it was used as an amulet to ward off evil and as a lucky charm, but today it is popular as a souvenir with its round shape and swaying neck.
Origin of Akabeko
There are two well-known origins of akabeko:
① Originated from a red cow that swept away epidemics in the Heian period
② Originated from the fact that red-haired cows helped carry lumber when rebuilding Enzo-ji Temple, which was destroyed by a major earthquake in the Aizu region 1,200 years ago.
This is Enzoji Temple. It is located in Yanaizu Town, about 2 hours by car from Kyukamura Urabandai.
At the Kyukamura Urabandai shop, we sell red beko of various sizes.
Why don't you come and see Akabeko at Kyukamura Urabandai this year's GW? ? ?
